Frimley Green Cricket Club (233/9) beat Hampstead Norreys CC (199 all out) by 34 runs
Sreemon Pillai
Amit’s back-pedalling sprint from slip to near the boundary to take the catch, never taking his eyes off the ball.

We won the toss and obviously chose to bat first. Amit and Sreemon opened the innings against a disciplined bowling attack that offered very few scoring opportunities. Boundaries were scarce and had to be earned the hard way. The pair responded with patience and excellent game awareness, steadily rotating the strike and ensuring the scoreboard continued to move. The run rate gradually climbed from four to five and then six runs per over. Despite the opposition fielding exceptionally well, our batsmen repeatedly found gaps, much to the growing frustration of the fielding side. Particularly irritating for them were several nicks by our batsmen, that travelled perfectly between wicketkeeper and slip for boundaries. The opening partnership eventually yielded an excellent 93 runs partnership before Amit was caught in the 13th over. Pinang arrived with positive intent, scoring a brisk 10 runs before departing two overs later. At the other end, Sreemon was producing a masterclass in controlled batting. He anchored the innings superbly before eventually falling in the 20th over, bringing an outstanding knock to an end. At 140-3, the innings appeared well-positioned. Naturally, this was the exact moment Cricket Gods decided to introduce some drama. Swaroop arrived at the crease, only to see Shanker run out two balls later, leaving us at 140-4. Swaroop's stay was also brief, and when his wicket fell at 143-5, a comfortable position suddenly looked rather less comfortable. Wickets had begun to fall with alarming regularity. While confidence remained high in the batting line-up, the knowledge that the opposition had successfully chased 304 in their previous match, there was an unease in the dugout area.

A valuable partnership between Rasheed and Vishnu added much-needed stability and approximately 45 runs before Rasheed was run out in the 30th over. 190-6. Senthil got bowled soon. 190-7. In next 31st over, Vishnu and Kumara’s wickets also fell within two balls of each other. The innings then threatened to unravel completely as wickets continued to fall. At 190-9, with only one wicket remaining and over four overs still left, the opposition sensed an opportunity to finish the innings quickly. Manoj and Shiv, however, had very different plans. What followed was one of the most valuable last-wicket stands of the season. Refusing to surrender their wickets, they also took the attack to the bowlers. Manoj struck several excellent sixes while Shiv also found few boundaries. A fielding side expecting a quick finish instead found itself chasing leather. Their partnership propelled the total to an impressive 233-9 from 35 overs, giving us a competitive score and, more importantly, restoring calm heart rates in the dressing room.

Rasheed opened the bowling and took a few deliveries to find his rhythm. The opposition batsmen started brightly, running aggressively between the wickets and collecting quick singles.
However, Shiv's second over conceded just a single run and immediately applied pressure. The breakthrough arrived in the third over when Rasheed clean bowled the opener. One over later, Shiv joined the party. A mistimed shot travelled towards backward point, where Amit sprinted from slip to gully to complete an excellent catch. The wickets had an immediate impact. Before the opposition could regroup, Shiv trapped their captain lbw and suddenly they found themselves struggling at 19-3. The next partnership attempted to rebuild, but Shiv returned to remove another batsman in the 10th over, leaving the score at 47-4.

One of the more memorable incidents of the afternoon came when Pinang threw ball at the stumps when a batsman wandered casually out of his crease, while the ball was still in play. Celebrations began instantly. The leg umpire, however, displayed exemplary honesty by informing everyone that he had not been watching the batsman and therefore could not fairly give him out. We let it go because of his honesty.

Shanker made an immediate impact by taking a wicket with the very first ball of his spell. At 52-5, the opposition were under severe pressure. A smart stumping by Pinang off Manoj's bowling reduced them to 80-6, before Manoj struck again to make it 90-7. Swaroop then claimed the eighth wicket in the 24th over, leaving the opposition at 115-8. At that stage, victory appeared only a matter of time. As cricket frequently demonstrates, appearances can be misleading. Whether we became slightly complacent or the opposition had deliberately hidden their most destructive batsman until the end remains open to debate. What is certain is that the scoring rate suddenly accelerated dramatically.

Boundaries started flowing, sixes followed, and overs began disappearing at over 12 runs apiece. With two wickets still in hand, their chase was becoming increasingly uncomfortable for us.
The equation that had seemed impossible was beginning to look distinctly achievable. Just as momentum threatened to swing completely, Rasheed delivered the crucial breakthrough, clean bowling the danger man in the 31st over to end a remarkable counterattack. At 192-9, the balance shifted back in our favour. The final wicket arrived in the next over. A superb throw from the boundary by Manoj was gathered brilliantly by Pinang, who completed a quick stumping to end the innings on 199.

An outstanding contest and a fitting final match of the season. The game had everything: disciplined batting, a middle-order wobble, a heroic last-wicket partnership, excellent bowling, sharp fielding, a late scare, and enough twists to keep both teams interested until the very end. For a few hours, neither side was willing to give an inch, which is exactly what made it such an enjoyable match and a memorable way to close the season.
