On the day that England regained the Ashes, Godalming held on for a draw here as Frimley Green just failed to get the 2 wickets they needed for victory.
Losing the toss but being inserted on a hard, true surface in bright sunshine, FGCC's openers made hay, with Dave Brown's hard-hitting 72 off just 53 balls the mainstay of an excellent opening partnership with Gordon Marsh. Once he departed, caught off the impressive young spinner McGregor Cox, the middle order were free to swing the bat but the runs were curtailed by some tricky spin bowling, the innings eventually being declared on a strong-looking 217/9 from 42 overs.
That score quickly looked more than enough as Nick Gates and David Huggett kept things tight in the opening overs of Godalming's reply, with both openers losing their stumps early on. Dave Brown then bowled an excellent spell to cement his MOTM award, taking 4 wickets, one of which resulted in a snapped bail. However, time was running out and Frimley Green needed wickets desperately. Jim Barker was brought into the attack and immediately made an impact, with a caught-and-bowled quickly followed by an LBW to leave Godalming on the edge of a cliff - 2 wickets needed, 4 overs left, no chance of victory. McGregor Cox, though, played the final overs out with a straight bat to earn a draw for his side.
